PHOTOGRAPH BY EVAN SEMÓN “BATTERED COVER,” JASON HELLER, DECEMBER 5 T U R N I N G T H E P A G E Tattered Cover now owned by Barnes & Noble? Joyce Meskis must be rolling over in her grave. Sally Froman Denver Denver has lost enough. We could not lose Tattered Cover, too. Although it makes me squirm to think I’m walking into a Barnes & Noble store when I go inside, I’m willing to give it a try. Emily Myer Denver The irony of reading about the demise of Denver’s fl agship local bookstore on...the Internet. I’d vote to make it a library branch. Problem solved. It’s not like access to buying books is an issue. Dave Nellis Denver As someone who remembers gloriously living in a loft apartment above Tattered Cover at 16th and Wynkoop, 2004-ish, when the US Postal Terminal Annex was still across the street and Union Station was virtually abandoned and dilapidated, and the TC loaded magazine and newspaper section along with the modest cafe was effectively my living room (Wazee Supper Club was my other living room)…before we point too many fi ngers, let’s ponder this November 24 article in The Atlantic: “The elite college students who can’t read books.” We’ve got a much bigger problem than nostalgia for a once epic local bookstore treasure. Not to be a snob, but how many of us have a DPL card? Start going if you haven’t been in a while. We still have an excellent library system in our city. Michael Segler Denver I liked the location across from Union Sta- tion; I was bummed when that closed. Colfax was/is kinda cool. The other four, though.... Gregor MacGregor Lafayette Bookstores are like RadioShack, Sports Authority and Circuit City: There isn’t enough money in it to keep the lights on. Jonathan Centero Denver Make magazine sections great again! Chris Bullock Denver We lost the Tattered Cover when it moved out of Cherry Creek North in 2006 after be- ing there for 34 years. Jeffrey Groton Denver Hot take: We lost the Tattered Cover for good in the late 2010s. Ben McKee Denver I hope Barnes & Noble keeps Charlie in place. He was the resident soul of Tattered Cover, appearing in different settings in the store in seasonal attire and caps. I used to live in Englewood, and always stopped by to greet him. I really do miss the restaurant on the top-fl oor site at the Cherry Creek location. Barbara Greer Forest Grove, Oregon Editor’s note: Tattered Cover featured Charlie (above) in a November 7 Flashback Thursday. He’s alive (okay, not quite) and well at the Aspen Grove location, though he’s reportedly off the fl oor for the holidays to make room for books and customers. TATTERED COVER
