28 NOVEMBER 21-27, 2024 westword.com WESTWORD | REAL ESTATE | RENTALS | HEALTH WELLNESS | SERVICES | EMPLOYMENT | ADULT | MUSIC | CLASSIFIED | CANNABIS CALENDAR Psychedelic wellness has been a hot topic in Colorado since the state decriminalized mushrooms, DMT and other natural psyche- delics in 2022, but the public still has a need for knowledge and safety tips. And everyone from soccer moms to granddads is interested. Coming to Denver for the fi rst time, this weekend’s Open Minds Expo wants to pounce on all of those questions about psychedelics. The two-day event includes talks on mush- rooms and sexuality, psychedelic retreats, ketamine therapy, breathwork and more. “It’s not for everybody all the time, but we know that a lot of people who are experiencing, you know, mental health issues of all different kinds or rooted in trauma have seen so much transformation in their lives from psychedelic therapy,” Expo CEO Jon Kamin says. Find out more about the expo and other events below in our Cannabis Calendar; fi nd the full version at westword.com/marijuana. A few states will usually legalize during a presidential election, but pot didn’t pass anywhere this time. Nardoozy Dear Nardoozy: Voters in Florida, North Dakota and South Dakota all rejected rec- reational cannabis ballot questions (nearly 56 percent of Floridians voted in favor of legalization, but the proposed amendment needed a 60 percent approval rate). Nebraska legalized medical marijuana, at least, so we got one win. Your overall point is correct, though: Cannabis legalization has hit a red wall, and the freedom and liberty sales pitch of legal pot has lost steam with Republicans. Save for Hawaii, New Hampshire and a few swing states, all of the states where recreational cannabis is still illegal are con- servative, and that doesn’t bode well for the plant. We might see more inroads for medical marijuana and an occasional suc- cessful attempt at commercial legalization in Hawaii or Pennsylvania, but legal weed is nearing capacity at a state-by-state level, making federal action even more necessary. Dear Stoner: We all know about the “walk outside” before Thanksgiving dinner, and I’ve seen a lot of recipes for infusing Thanks- giving dishes with weed — but how do I use weed to lengthen my day of eating? I want to treat it more like a marathon, not a sprint. Rooster Cockburn Dear Rooster: The munchies have always been more of a marathon than a sprint for me, most cannabis users I’ve talked to, and even Major League Eating, which oversees the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4. According to the MLE, competi- tors aren’t tested for THC, because it doesn’t impact how fast you eat, even if it does press a few glutton buttons inside our stomachs. Smoking or eating weed before a true feast is a surefi re way to erode discipline and energy, but have you considered toking up after the fi rst round? The classic pre-dinner walk ’n’ puff on Thanksgiving is about a one- time binge, but saving the joint for after the fi rst plate will stoke the fl ames for seconds and reignite pumpkin pie passions. Eating an edible fi fteen or twenty minutes before the bird is ready is another way to lengthen your time at the pig trough, or you could infuse an appetizer or wash things down with a THC soda. Adding edibles to the meal won’t make you less hungry, that’s for sure. Send questions to [email protected].
