ART BY WESTWORD AND THE COLORADO SNOWSPORTS MUSEUM “ALWAYS FORWARD,” ALAN PRENDERGAST, NOVEMBER 14 T A K E T H E H I G H G R O U N D Incredible story by Alan Prendergast about the 10th Mountain Division. I love your history of Colorado articles, and this was particularly good. Jane Haven Denver Loved your article “Always Forward,” about the 10th Mountain Division. As a ge- ologist, my father was exempt from military service because of the critical role of oil in the war. He volunteered anyway, and was initially sent to work at the Army hospital in Colorado Springs because the military at fi rst thought that a geologist was some kind of doctor. He eventually worked feverishly on guiding the air war through the Pacifi c, injured and returned to service after an early 1945 recon- naissance crash landing. Got the Bronze Star and returned home with aerial photos of the war, including stereographs of the aftermath of one of the nuclear hits on Japan. In trying to get funding for an oil deal with some Texans, my father was “coerced” to buy some stock in this harebrained ski resort the Texans were funding in Vail. He thought it was ridiculous, but my mother declared that we must try it out, so we — a family with seven kids — drove out to spend Christmas in Vail for its opening year. Arriving at night on the two-lane, it was hard to see the few lights of the tiny village from the highway. As a stockholder, my father had the right to buy an acre of land in the town of Vail for $10,000. Against my mother’s pleading, he turned that down as a ridiculous price. Did it again the second year, when the price was $10K for half an acre. Eventually, we started going out to Vail for each Christmas, buying a condo on the creek and watching it grow. Somehow, as a veteran, my father seemed to know Pete Seibert and some of the other veteran resort players and skied with them a few times, though my father, a decent athlete, was just a beginner skier. He and many of these veterans were lifelong, patriotic Republicans. I doubt that they would recognize, much less support, that miserably misguided party today. Thanks for expanding this story. Robert Messman Denver Yet another great article on Colorado’s mountains and how being a 10th Mountain Division alumni helped grow not only ski resorts, but the Nike empire as well. Would just like to point out that the world-famous Red Tails Tuskegee Airmen trained at Camp Hale as they prepared to head to Korea. My pops, Captain Henry Bowman, and hundreds of Black heroes moved families to Denver and learned how to survive winter wars! Me and my moms and big sister lived on 28th and High, by Manual High, in the Pigford home. Funny how there is always a very historic lesson when it comes to telling stories about America that get left out but not forgotten: Black Army Air Corps troops trained here, and many stayed or, like this reporter, came back to a place they lived decades ago! While many trained in weather and became meteo- rologists, others fl ew hundreds of missions in Korea and Vietnam, where winter training didn’t count. I still have Dad’s fi rst-generation Sorel winter boots! Jon Bowman Denver “GRISWOLD’S GREATEST GAFFES,” HANNAH METZGER, NOVEMBER 7 G E T O U T T H E V O T E We got the president we wanted, so Jena Griswold’s bullshit didn’t matter in the long run. MAGA peeps from all walks of life have spoken up against the woke/DEI movement. Democrats won’t have any signifi cant power for decades, especially after the mass deporta- tions and the economy starts humming again. I love it! Bunch of fucking pussies whining over Trump. The only thing Westword is good for is advertising the weed deals around town. Michael Madden Denver
