My wife judges me for “getting high at work.” Who’s wrong? Tabe Dear Tabe: You are, for coming to me for relationship advice. If your job requires THC drug tests, random video meetings or phone calls — or, God forbid, frequent Slack messages — then I see why your wife is con- cerned. Getting too stoned or experiencing unintended effects are always risks when consuming, and both of those situations inevitably turn into a nap or other lengthy distraction. But then, you could argue the same thing about food and caffeine. Drink- ing too much coffee or eating a huge lunch kills concentration and makes the afternoon a slog. But neither of those actions would get us fi red on our days off. Weed still can. Still, I’m mostly on your side. We’re not “at work” if we’re typing an email in bed without pants on, and small hits don’t take regular users into deep waters. The occa- sional toke while at home isn’t a big deal, but only if it stays that way and is done when stakes are low. Dear Stoner: Why can’t I smell weed at dispensaries anymore? Is it a law? Dear Shane: Dispensaries like to say that their rules are mandated by state law, which is usually the case. With ID checks, purchas- ing limits and take-home warnings, buying cannabis is the most regulated retail experi- ence in Colorado, even more so than buying guns (go to a Tanner Gun Show and tell me I’m wrong). There are stores in Denver that aren’t as strict, however, and the occasional store will still give away free whiffs, because smelling open weed jars isn’t a crime. Dispensaries stopped showing off open jars of buds or allowing up-close customer sniffs during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of their social distancing policies. The majority of Colorado pot shops have kept this practice going or switched entirely to pre- packaged fl ower to avoid germs entering jars. While that makes sense for product safety, it’s not a state law. Neither are cell-phone bans, ID scans or the requirement that IDs be horizon- tal at dispensaries. These rules take fun away from the experience and make shopping for cannabis feel like something to be ashamed of, but they’re products of cautious operators in an overregulated environment.
