Since it’s basically purifi ed THC, I was curious whether different distillates would all rate the same. Ron Swan Dear Ron: Valid question, but even with distil- late, price and quality are connected. Think of it like vodka: It’s all distilled, but is every bottle going to be the same? Those bottom- shelf shots we took in our twenties don’t taste as smooth as Belvedere or Grey Goose — and we defi nitely don’t wake up feeling as nimble after drinking the cheap stuff. Don’t let the clear and astringent qualities fool you: Factors like starting material, equipment, technique and storage all matter when making distilled products, from vodka to THC vape oil. Distilled THC is refi ned, and different batches may test the same, but they can (and likely will) taste different due to age and dif- ferences in cannabis quality and extraction tech. I’ve felt nauseous after vaping fl avored distillate or eating homemade edibles made with distillate, and cheap gummies infused with bottom-of-the-barrel distillate usually come with a catch, whether it be weaker highs or woozier effects. I’m more of a full- spectrum guy, if you couldn’t tell. Dear Stoner: Why are people still buying dis- pensaries in Colorado? After how much sales have gone down, it doesn’t seem like the best business to be getting into right now — but I still see old dispensaries getting bought all the time. Sugar Steph Dear Sugar Steph: We see plenty of otherwise smart people take on dumb projects. Blame it on hubris, passion or being blinded by personal desires, but countless NFL coaches and single women have wasted their time on loser pros- pects. Business owners aren’t that different, especially when we’re talking about the can- nabis trade, which is still alluring despite high taxes and strict regulatory and fi nancial rules. A lot of cannabis business owners look- ing to get out of the industry have debt they can’t pay, and that can lead to an extremely cheap (or “free”) dispensary or cultivation for anyone willing to pay off that debt. That may not be enticing enough for us, but some business owners think better times are ahead for those who survive this long and painful weeding-out process in Colorado. We’re still seeing plenty of stores swap ownership in the meantime, but it’s hard to fathom Colorado keeping all these dispensaries open as sales decline year after year. Send questions to
