22 JULY 3-6, 2025 westword.com WESTWORD | REAL ESTATE | RENTALS | HEALTH WELLNESS | SERVICES | EMPLOYMENT | ADULT | MUSIC | CLASSIFIED | H I G H N O T E S BY THOMAS MITC HELL Denver’s cannabis scene has suffered an- other shaky year so far, with several notable dispensaries closing: Police & Thieves, the Health Center’s Uptown location and, most recently, L’Eagle dispensary, Verde Natural and Verde’s sister store in Boulder, Hash House. And that’s just a small sliver of the bad news across Colorado. In a sad puff of irony, some of my fa- vorite buds this spring came from Verde, particularly the cheesy, sweet Lemon Belts. But life may continue: Although all stores have closed, there is still Verde fl ower for sale in other dispensaries. The company hasn’t responded to requests for comment, but budtenders at several stores carrying Verde fl ower and rosin from Dablogic, which is under Verde ownership, say the company still plans to provide wholesale product go- ing forward. As a longtime fan of Dablogic and Verde strains like Disco Belts, Bubble Jack and the fl agship Super Lemon Haze, I’d hate to see those genetics go away. Seeing L’Eagle, another longtime dis- pensary, close shop in late June hurt, too. Independently owned since Amy and John Andrle opened it sixteen years ago, L’Eagle was one of Denver’s fi rst organic grows and produced some serious heat in its heyday. I’ll never forget sampling L’Eagle’s Sour Diesel and Texas Hash Plant in the mid-2010s, and the Andrles tried hard to maintain those classic genetics long before tissue culture became the norm. But cannabis is meant to be enjoyed, even in the hard times. As the world burns and our local dispensary scene goes with it, we should shout out the people and brands still giving it their best. SPCY Canna, a young-but-hardened cul- tivation based in the Denver area, has been on fi re in 2025, pumping out my favorite smokes of the year so far, including Chocolate Diesel, a gorgeous combo of Chocolope and Sour Diesel that lives up to the pedigree, and Super Durban, a stanky-sour mix of the timeless Durban Poison and Super Silver Haze. Both produce versatile highs that are relatively low on anxiety and drowsiness, making them perfect for summer sessions outside. Not to be outdone, 710 Labs has vastly expanded its deli-style fl ower this year to match current economic demand, and the more affordable eighths have been pleasantly consistent. Date Night, a zesty, sweet and woody hybrid of Peanut Butter Breath and Shallot Sashimi, and the OG-heavy Cold Creek Kush are a strong one-two combo for daytime and nighttime.
