KELTY, MAY 11 L A N G U A G E B A R R I E R My parents spoke Spanish when alone, and the only Spanish we learned was in Starkville and Trinidad, when we were with grandpar- ents and great-grandparents. They knew English but would mostly talk Spanish to us. My cousins and I talk about how some of us “look” Hispanic and some of us don’t. I don’t. It has always bothered me. One of my cousins was Emanuel Martinez’s fi rst wife; she passed away years ago. I went to high school with Emanuel, and we are still good friends. I wanted to be in the movement with her and Emanuel, but I just did not fi t in. Yet I was fi red from jobs when my boss would fi nd out I was not “white.” Once I went to a pizza place with three cousins; two of us looked white and two looked very much Hispanic. Two of us were offered a table, but the other two were told there were no tables available. The hostess did not know we were all together; we left. Years later, I got a job as a waitress there and was fi red when they found out I was Hispanic. Now I am the founder of the Somebody Cares Project/EM Food Pantry and proud to say I am recognized as a women of color by the Women and Girls of Color. I would love to see a story about others like me who are proud of who we are, yet for years we really did not know where we belonged. Elaine Apodaca-Martinez Trinidad I grew up in Denver, fi rst-generation here. My older brothers were born in Cd. Juarez. They would tell me as they were growing up in west Denver (1972 to early 1980) that the parks and restaurants would have signs ev- erywhere that read “No Mexicans allowed,” or drinking fountain signs that read “Whites only.” I thank God that my parents taught me and my little sister Spanish. I got married (to a Northsider) whose parents also taught her Spanish. That’s one of the norms in our house, to continue to speak Spanish. We in- stilled in our children to be proud of who you are and where your grandparents came from. Speak Spanish freely. Don’t be afraid to. Palomares Chepo Denver I grew up in Denver. My mama would only speak Spanish when she did not want me to know something. I once asked her why. She said, “Because I did not want you to be punished in school the way I was.” Sad but true. Yet my grandparents only spoke Spanish. Barbara Smart-Mendoza Denver Bennito L. Kelty mistakenly said that “Corky Gonzales was instrumental in orga- nizing the West High School blowouts.” This is not true; the walkouts were organized by students. Please don’t erase this important history of how students were instrumental in the organizing of the Civil Rights Move- ment in Denver. Gonzales did do an excellent job in de- fending students’ action to the public and the police, but he did not organize the walkouts. Helen Giron-Mushfi q Denver Fascinating article, but isn’t it also techni- cally incorrect? As far as I can fi nd, ‘alma’ is not a mascu- line word, it is feminine. It just uses ‘el’ and ‘un’ because it starts with an A (so the article changes, in order to avoid the awkwardness between the words of “la alma”). In the plural it uses the feminine ‘las’ (“las almas”), and adjectives get feminine endings (e.g. “un alma hermosa,” “a beautiful soul”). Same deal for ‘agua,’ which is the most common word learners are introduced to this quirk with — it is feminine, but uses ‘el.’ The article using ‘agua’ as an example of masculine words ending in -a is another mistake. But they’re correct that there are some masculine words ending in -a (many of which come from Greek, like ‘planeta’, ‘problema’ and ‘idioma’). The overall topic of this article is really interesting and worth covering. But I wish the language detail was more accurate!
