ILLUSTRATION BY KARL CHRISTIAN KRUMPHOLZ “NO TELL HOTEL,” PATRICIA CALHOUN, MAY 16 U P I N A R M S The Brown Palace needs to be seized by the city or state in a bloodless coup (if possible), but bloody if not. Current ownership and management is completely inept. The Palace Arms has been raising prices while decreasing the dining experience for years. If “fi ne dining is dead,” it’s because they are killing it. We (concerned Denverites) need to fi nd a new, responsible caretaker for this icon of our city. Thanks for all you do for Denver and for local journalism, Ms. Calhoun! Ross Lindsay Jacobsmeyer Westminster The crucial element in your stories about the Brown Palace seems to be the downfall brought about by the sale to Crescent Real Estate in 2018, and their appointment of HEI Hotels & Resorts to run it. Service and quality have suffered greatly, and their treatment of staff has been appalling — all of which go hand in hand. Of course, the pandemic didn’t help, but is no excuse. I’ve talked with many friends recently who said they will never return after trying several times to dine at the Brown and fi nding it completely lacking. Yet many Denverites, like me, want this icon to make it. Taylor Swift nights aren’t the answer. High-quality service and excellent food are. Maybe an in-depth story about how this new management company drove an elegant jewel to the brink is in order. Julie Murphy Seavy Denver My wife and I stayed at the Brown Palace in late April. We dined at both the Ship Tavern and the Palace Arms. While we enjoyed our time there, we did fi nd the entire establishment a bit of a “faded rose.” It is not the hotel of old. Gregory Harkness Sheridan Lake I was upset that the Palace Arms was go- ing away. You were the only one in town that I know of writing about it who included the “why” in the story: Business was “dismal.” I’m as guilty as anyone else. I asked myself, “Okay, when was the last time you took someone to the Palace Arms?” I realized it had been years. Sad to read about it, though. But thanks for the article; I suppose everything has to come to an end eventually. David Queen Denver So sad what has been done to this iconic hotel and its loyal employees. Ellyngton’s is completely destroyed; it has been stripped naked and the charm is gone! No need to ever go back. Mary Maybee Highlands Ranch Tsk, tsk. I see photos for the high tea online, but it does not appear as though they have the proper placement of their layers. It should be fi rst level: savories and sandwiches; second level: scones; top level: sweets. I don’t know what these bloody Ameri- cans think they are doing, but I’ve seen photos where it’s scones on the bottom layer and sandwiches on the second. Shudder! The Dowager Countess would be mortifi ed! Laura Alexander Denver “CHECKING OUT,” CATIE CHESHIRE, MAY 16 A B I T T E R H A R V E S T Oh, the stories the Harvest House could tell. As a songwriter I know so aptly wrote, “A building is never so sad as when it hits the ground.” Carolyn Toth Denver I personally think it is really sad that all of these places that used to give Boulder its unique vibe are being demolished. I know the place isn’t what it used to be, but Boulder is going to be so boring. Just hotels, banks and chain places. Ashley Telleen Boulder That’s an “important piece of history”?
