A S K A S T O N E R BY HERBERT FUEGO Dear Stoner: I saw a recent question you answered about the danger of putting oils in bongwater. It made me wonder: Is there any other liquid besides water worth putting in your bong? Jamey Dear Jamey: You can put most drinkable liquids in bongs and give ‘em a rip, from milk to Jim Beam. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should, but I’m not here to ruin a day of curious stoner fun, especially if you’re new to this weed stuff. I’ve put Gatorade, fruit juice and what- ever shitty whiskey was in my older brother’s closet into my bongs at times, probably all before I was old enough to legally smoke. It’s a fun, novelty toke once or twice, but it gets old fast for a variety of reasons. First off, the fl avor impact is minimal and gets weaker each time as the water gets weed- ifi ed. Second, most non-water drinks have sugar, which is a pain to clean after it mixes with ash and smoking residue. You’re also spending a lot more to fi ll your bong with juice than water. When I want a smoother hit, I put ice cubes in my bong — made from water, of course. Dear Stoner: I love to read after smoking weed, but lately I can’t remember anything. I’ll smoke a couple bowls, read four or fi ve chapters, and then barely retain anything. Have you dealt with this, and is there any- thing I can do about it? Hazy Historian Dear Hazy Historian: There are probably a few factors at play, such as your age, THC tolerance and the herb and litera- ture involved. My short-term memory is defi nitely worse as I get older, and my cannabis use increases as my tolerance grows. If you’re a regular cannabis user, it’s probably time to take a short break or reduce toking time to reset or weaken your THC tolerance. Stick to a few hits before reading instead of multiple bowls, and make sure you’re not getting distracted by your phone or life, because stoned interruptions only weaken an already-crispy memory. Consider taking fi sh oil or a nutritional memory supplement, and reconsider the books you choose for weed-and-read sessions. Anything involving ancient names or sci-fi lore is a non-starter for me — ain’t no way I’m remembering that shit after a bong rip — so maybe it’s time for more traditional fi ction.
