I thought that was only at grocery stores. Perturbed Dear Perturbed: Denver’s citywide ordinance dictating that ten cents be charged for plastic bags primarily affected grocery stores, but a statewide law implemented on January 1 took things much further. The law requires all stores and retail food establishments to charge ten cents for recycled paper or single-use plastic bags in 2023; in 2024, only paper bags will be an option, and you’ll still need to pay. Both laws were passed as efforts to get us to rely on reusable bags instead of generating plastic waste, which is an effort I can get be- hind. These changes will come with growing pains (I now own twenty reusable grocery bags because I keep forgetting them in my car), but taking bags to the store isn’t very hard. That said, the state could have done a better job of educating Coloradans about the upcoming change, because Walmart seems to be the only entity to have effectively communicated the issue. I don’t blame dispensaries for not being in the loop, but any pot shop charging you the fee without telling you fi rst deserves criticism, and you should share your displeasure. Who needs a bag for a small jar of weed, anyway? Dear Stoner: I recently read an article about can- nabis farmers’ markets taking place in Califor- nia. That sounds like a cool way to discover new weed. Why can’t Colorado do things like that? Cory Dear Cory: Northern California and San Fran- cisco have hosted a few events labeled as cannabis farmers’ markets, with a recent SF version outlined by SFGate. Although these cannabis sales gatherings are held at licensed dispensaries and aren’t exactly laid out in public like traditional farmers’ markets, the events do effectively connect consumers with smaller brands they might not have noticed otherwise, thanks to a handful of growers, edibles makers and extractors present to promote their products. Some of the markets even allow you to try the products on site! The Denver area actually has one thing like that: JAD’s Mile High Smoke, Colorado’s only licensed cannabis bar, holds a bi-weekly event showcasing new dispensary brands and cannabis companies. The vendors come in, set up, and then you can sample each product for a small fee. Find out more about Denver’s lone version of a cannabis farmers’ market, dubbed Taste of JAD’s, at smokeatjads.com.
