We’ve had other book fairs, of course, but I can’t recall the last time it happened. I thought it was time.” Time specifically for the Indie Author and Press Book Fair, set for September 30 at Counterpath and designed to be as open and inclusive as possible, with a seller’s area as well as readings, panels and even a dance party to end the night. Colorado Symphony Centennial Season All season Boettcher Concert Hall, Denver Performing Arts Complex coloradosymphony.com The Colorado Symphony kicked off its 100th season on September 9 by playing the score to a live screening of Star Wars: A New Hope, and there are plenty more hopeful signs for the next century, starting with the brass portion of the symphony performing classical and pop hits at McGregor Square on October 4 (tickets are $49.50). The next evening, none other than Stewart Copeland of the Police will join the symphony for Police Deranged, an orchestral celebra- tion of his music with conductor Wilbur Lin at Boettcher Concert Hall (tickets are $15-$103). And there are many more joyful sounds to come. Hallowmass Friday, October 27, and Saturday, October 28, 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Mercury Cafe, 2199 California Street itchyo.com Hallowmass is an annual ritual for Denver’s famed sixty-member drum troupe itchy-O, and this year marks the ninth iteration of the immersive, experiential concert in its most intimate venue yet. Billed as a “Celebration of Impermanence,” Hallowmass is more of a ceremony than an ordinary concert, steeped in philosophical lore to produce what itchy-O calls a “vehicle of ultimate transcendence.” The group will play two sets each night, with one at 6 p.m. and the other at 9 p.m. Tickets ($37) to the all-ages show have already sold out for the second set on Saturday, so be sure to get yours before it’s too late to join in this iconic, spooky celebration at the Merc. Día de los Muertos Friday, November 3 Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe denversartdistrict.org While the Denver Botanic Gardens has retired its annual Day of the Dead fes- tivities this year, there are a lot of other opportunities to celebrate, including a festival along the Art District on Santa Fe on November’s First Friday, which will include the annual Día de los Muertos procession, costume contests, sugar skull painting and more. Adding to the excite- ment is the return of CHAC Gallery to the area (834 Santa Fe Drive, specifically), which will host an exhibition titled Life, Death and Rebirth/Vida, Muerte y Re- nacimiento, with art by Shay Guerrero, from October 6 through November 17 and a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on opening night. Denver Film Festival Friday, November 3, through November 12 Sie FilmCenter and other venues ............. Westword started six months before the Denver Film Festival, and we’ve always had a soft spot for our (slightly) younger cultural sibling. So should you: For 46 years, the festival has brought the best cinematic storytelling from around the world to the Mile High City. The 2023 edition should be no different: Focuses this year include an intensive look at Italian cinema. Roll ’em! Take Ten continued from page 6
