phoenixnewtimes.com NEW TIMES 2019 BOWL GUIDE SPECIAL RETAIL SECTION PHOENIX NEW TIMES DEC. 26TH, 2019–JAN. 1ST, 2020 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl December 31st, 12pm MST Sun Bowl Stadium, El Paso, TX By Kevin Lambert ASU Coach Herm Edwards is seeking his first bowl victory as head coach, and his playmaker at quarterback has the attitude and athleticism to make it happen. Freshman QB Jayden Daniels (17 TD, 2 INT, 249.8 yds/g) electrified the PAC 10 in 2019, playing above expectations and beyond his years. First Team All PAC 10 junior RB Eno Benjamin (10 TDs, 90.3 yds/g) keeps a rugged ground game churning in the right direction, while sophomore LB Darien Butler (79 T, 5 TFL, 3 forced fumbles) and senior LB Khaylan Kearse-Thomas (57 T, 4.5 S, 11 TFL) anchor a formidable defensive unit. It remains to be seen whether Benjamin, senior C Cohl Cabral and senior WR Brandon Aiyuk (8 TDs, 99.3 yds/g) will play in the Sun Bowl, as each may choose to preserve their bodies for the NFL draft. FSU New Florida State head coach Mike Norvell won’t be taking over the team for their matchup with ASU in the Sun Bowl, a minor disappointment given his four-year stint as OC and QB coach for the Sun Devils. But interim coach Odell Haggins—the longest-tenured assistant in the country coming into the 2020 season—will stay on the FSU staff, and this is music to the ears of the players he’s coached. Sophomore QB James Blackman (16 TD, 7 INT) looks to complete a solid though unspectacular season with a victory, and essential to the cause is sophomore WR Tamorrion Terry (8 TD, 1023 yds) and junior RB Cam Akers (14 TD, 104 yds/g). Ready to rebuff the Sun Devil attack are studs at three levels, DL Janarius Robinson (3 S, 9 TFL), LB Emmett Rice (65 T, 4.5 TFL) and junior DB Hamdah Nasirildeen (2 INT, 101 T). Prediction: ASU 30, FSU 26 51
