martini, made with vanilla-flavored vodka and Borghetti, is a soft, delectable experience while the Old Fashion Espresso offers a darker, more bitter and boozy time. From decor to drinks, this place is crisp. TT ROADHOUSE 2915 N. 68th St., Scottsdale If a punk rock palace is what you’re searching for, venture to this Scottsdale bar that stands alone in a town known for clubs with bottle service and pumping beats. With no glitz or glam, TT Roadhouse has been a destination to mix and mingle with folks who don’t mind hearing some classic punk tunes pouring through the speakers while they’re downing beer from a stellar list of choices. It’s also a favorite among bike aficionados, from motorized choppers to ones that require pedaling. The array of stylish wheels makes the outside a fun spot to chat and peruse the two-wheeled rides. Inside, try your hand at darts and pool, or head to the patio to chill outdoors. Check the calendar for special events, which sometimes include live bands. Yuma Road, Goodyear Like Doctor Who’s TARDIS, Roman’s Oasis is bigger on the inside. From the parking lot, the historic bar looks a bit ramshackle, a roadhouse that has evolved and grown over the decades. Inside, the sprawling bar goes on and on. The front room, anchored by a shuffleboard table and a large portrait of John Wayne, leads to a spacious dance floor where lessons happen three nights a week. Keep exploring, and you’ll find more rooms with pool tables, endless tables, chairs and a narrow patio. Staring at the walls is its own pastime at Roman’s; grab a cheap drink and wander the bar looking at decades of memorabilia, including country music album covers, spring training merch, NASCAR ephemera, vintage beer signs and even a faded Spuds MacKenzie advertisement. The food menu is surprisingly substantial, and you can’t go wrong with the Southwest Burger, a house special. Add in karaoke, live music, poker, friendly staff and a total lack of pretension, and we have to give Roman’s the highest praise we can think of: We wish we lived closer. Fifth Ave., Scottsdale 480.478.8834 After opening less than a year ago, Three Beans Cafe is the new kid on the block in Old Town Scottsdale. It both fits right in and offers something a little different than its neighbors. The small, nostalgic yet chic space is basically open all day, every day with hours from 10 a.m. to around midnight, depending on the day of the week. Its menu is satisfyingly simple, speckled with a handful of the cafe’s signature espresso martini offerings, other cocktails, coffee and croissants. As far as the espresso drinks go, there’s a range of flavors. Mill Ave., Tempe Watch your step as you head down to this basement, quasi-amphitheater that doubles as a jazz club. The high-key energy is punc- tuated by dueling piano ballads covering a wide range of classics everyone can sing along to. With lots of seating options, you can bring the whole gang and sip on signature fish bowls or try a fruity mule – the mango is our favorite. The lively entertainment and intimate but buzzing atmosphere will keep you there late into the night. THE CHILL ROOM 1320 E. Broadway Road, #108, Tempe For the past two years, this pretense-free strip-mall gathering spot has been serving up an alcohol-free menu and a packed slate of community-led events five minutes from the Arizona State University campus. The trappings of a big night out are here: flatscreens turned to the NFL, weekly karaoke that people sing stone-sober, open mics, board games, trivia nights, pumpkin carving nights, a pool table, puffy couches to flomp into — just super wholesome stuff all around. You might mistake the Chill Room for an indie coffee shop were it not for a drinks menu that does aim to get you a lil buzz on, sans alcohol. You can get kratom teas with CBD or kava boosts, decaf tea-based cocktails, herbal mocktails, CBD wine, NA beers, coffees, sodas, waters. When you’re ready for a more conspira- torial atmosphere than the spacious main room offers, a couple of side rooms — one of which has a photo booth — let you gossip in privacy. The family-owned estab- lishment also employs the Valley’s most charming door detail: a highly pettable pillow of a dog named Logan, who wears a black SECURITY shirt to work.
