BY NICOLE LOPEZ-ALVAR W hile “fall” skips us down in South Florida each year (we’re lucky if we can experience a breezy 78-degree night here and there), there are two seasons that never skip a beat come autumn in South Florida: stone crab season and its sweet sister, Knaus Berry Farm cinnamon bun season. The annual ooey-gooey, melt-in-your- mouth, worthy-of-an-hours-long-wait cin- namon phenomenon that is Knaus Berry Farm’s seasonal cinnamon buns is here, and South Florida is very excited. So excited, in fact, that an Instagram post published by the farm and bakery gar- nered more than 4,000 likes and interac- tions from its mega fans and longtime patrons this past week. That’s a whole lot of love for a spot that only accepts cash. Yes, it’s still one of the last standing farm stands in South Florida that doesn’t accept credit cards. (Therefore, don’t even think of ask- ing its friendly staff about Apple Pay at the cash register.) So, why all the fuss? Below, discover everything you need to know about the legendary buns and how you can get your hands on Knaus Berry Farm’s cinnamon buns as soon as tomorrow. Farm and Family Founded as a roadside stand in 1956 in Home- stead by brothers Ray and Russell Knaus, Knaus Berry Farm’s cinnamon buns and strawberry milkshakes are the stuff of Miami- Dade County legend. It’s a right of passage to make the annual trek down to Homestead come November and wait in the seemingly endless line for the pleasure of U-pick strawberries, bread, freshly picked produce, and, of course, the fa- mous cinnamon buns. And not much has changed since 1956. The farm is still run by Ray and his wife Barbara’s children and their families, al- though in 2023, tragedy struck the family when Rachel Knaus Grafe, its late co-owner, died at the age of 66. Though the bakery now serves other items, including fruit shakes and local vegetables, Knaus Berry Farm still accepts only cash. Knaus is open from late October to mid- April annually. But the cinnamon rolls freeze remarkably well, so pick up a few dozen ex- tra. Pop them in the oven on a Sunday morn- ing, and they’ll instantly fill your home with the scent of cinnamon and vanilla. Buns, Buns, Buns If you can’t make it to Homestead, continue reading to discover where you can find the famed buns across Miami. New Times spoke to Knaus Berry Farm to get the low-down on where you can get your hands on the buns this season. For those in Miami-Dade and Broward counties who don’t wish to make the trek down to Home- stead, there may be plenty of other closer and faster options. Babe’s Meat & Counter in Palmetto Bay (and Possibly Josh’s Premium Meats in SoMi) “As far as we know, we will be doing Babe’s Meat & Counter, as well as Josh’s Premium Meats. Six-packs will be available there as it was last year unless things change,” says a representative. Both Babe’s Meat & Counter in Palmetto Bay and Josh’s Premium Meats in South Miami may sell bags of the Knaus Berry buns by the half-dozen throughout Knaus Berry Farm’s open season, which be- gins each year on November 1 and ends sometime in April. Please call ahead to con- firm. Potentially on Delivery App GoPuff According to the spokesperson, the cinnamon buns may also return to the quick delivery service app GoPuff. “We’ll possibly be work- ing with GoPuff. Nothing is confirmed at this point.” Collaborations With Popular Local Ice Cream Shops “We’ve been working with Azucar Ice Cream for some time, as well as Melanie’s and Chill- N Nitrogen Ice Cream,” says the spokesper- son. Azucar Ice Cream, with locations in Little Havana and Pinecrest, is known for its “Bourbon Buns” ice cream (Jim Beam ice cream with Knaus Berry Farms cinnamon buns swirled inside). Last season, Knaus Berry collaborated with Chill-N to create cin- namon roll ice cream. Yum. Chef Michael’s in Islamorada Chef Michael’s restaurant in Islamorada down in the Florida Keys “likes to make bread pudding with our cinnamon rolls,” adds the representative.
