BY SHAWN MACOMBER I t only took 16 years, 28 albums, dayglo digitized hyperviolence, and a bit of that subversive Vice City magic for Austra- lian electro-psychedelic rockers King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard to land on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The digital human-body-and-wreckage- strewn path to this perhaps improbable suc- cess began two years ago, when the French electronic duo Justice reached out to King Gizzard about contributing some rock n’ roll jams to a video game for which they were then composing an original score: “Grand Theft Auto VI,” the Miami-set iteration of the action-adventure series now slated for a Nov. 19 release. “The six songs we sent them sounded like T-Rex or something — heaps of har- monica, hand percussion and piano glissan- dos constantly,” King Gizzard vocalist/ guitarist Stu Mackenzie tells New Times. Some of these raw rock materials got dropped into Justice’s studio melting pot alongside contributions from Tame Impala (!) and SZA (!!), resulting in the track “Flower in a Hurricane,” which “Grand Theft Auto” publisher Rockstar Games chose as the soundtrack to the game’s offi- cial launch trailer. Not only has that trailer amassed more than 69 million views in the less than two weeks since it was posted on YouTube Oct. 15, but Billboard reports the full-length track from the Take-Two Interactive Software/At- lantic/Because/Virgin-released soundtrack is pushing five million streams and sales of more than 1,000 units in the U.S. — enough to land the No. 62 spot on the aforementioned Hot 100 Chart. “[I’m] surprised to see what became of one of the songs,” Mackenzie mar- vels, “and grateful to be part of the project.” (Other collaborators/contributors to the game’s soundtrack include Yung Lean, Keith Richards, Morgan Wallen, Travis Scott, Fu- ture, Cardi B, Fuerza Regida and others.) For those mostly familiar with King Giz- zard’s psych/acid rock roots, “Flower in a Hurricane” might seem like a major depar- ture. Not so. The ever-evolving band’s most recent album, “Alien Metal,” released on July 8, according to its accompanying press materials, “grew out of last year’s ‘rave shows where traditional instruments were abandoned as the band gathered around an expansive synthe- sizer setup, each making their own manipulations to cre- ate a mind-altering whole.” The process, Mackenzie says, “completely rewired my brain. I was like, ‘I’m going to forget everything I know about music and re- learn it all from scratch.’” And that, friends, is how you write a song that lands you on the soundtrack of a Miami- celebrating video game that makes “Scarface” look like “Blue’s Clues” while en route to ac- tual pop chart success. Is there any more Gizzard to be heard once the full version of the game hits consoles next month? Don’t ask Mackenzie! “I think some of the other songs might be included in the game in some capacity,” he tells New Times. “But to be honest, I don’t really know what’s going on. I’ve been making techno in my bedroom this whole time.”
