BY CARLOS OMAR GARDINET F aena Theater is keeping the jazz flowing long after summer ends. The Miami Beach venue has launched its ninth annual Faena Jazz Series, running through June 2027 with a globe-spanning mix of sultry jazz, Latin rhythms, Brazilian bossa nova, In- dian classical influences, Argentine tango, and soulful vocals inside the theater’s gilded 150-seat room. The series kicked off Sunday, Oct. 8, with British jazz vocalist Emma Smith, an award- winning singer and finalist in the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competi- tion. Grammy-nominated producer Rachel Faro has returned as curator and producer, assembling a season that puts an especially strong spotlight on women while showcasing the many sounds and traditions that continue to shape jazz. On Oct. 21, percussionist Sammy Figueroa joins Cuban vocalist Aymée Nuviola for “A Celebration of Latin Jazz,” promising a rhythmic, percussion-driven night steeped in Afro-Cuban flavor. November brings the Reg- inald Policard Quintet featuring trumpeter Jean Caze, followed on Dec. 9 by trumpeter and composer Etienne Charles, who brings the warm, spirited sounds of the Caribbean to the theater with “A Creole Christmas.” Then comes one of the season’s major highlights. Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto performs two shows on Jan. 14 in collabora- tion with the South Beach Jazz Festival. The Grammy-nominated artist has spent decades putting her own sensual, sophisticated spin on bossa nova, blending the genre’s famously dreamy rhythms with modern electronic and jazz influences. And the music is in her blood. Gilberto is the daughter of legendary bossa nova pioneer João Gilberto and singer Miú- cha, while her uncle is acclaimed Brazilian singer-songwriter Chico Buarque. She grew up surrounded by some of the most influen- tial sounds in Brazilian music and has forged a distinctive voice of her own. February brings Grammy-winning vocalist Nicole Zuraitis, whose lush, expressive sing- ing and jazz-pop sensibility have earned her an international following. Danielle Angrand takes the stage in March with pianist Shelly Berg, followed in April by Vari, the stage name of Indian vocalist, composer, and multi- instrumentalist Varijashree Venugopal, whose intricate, improvisational music draws from both Indian classical traditions and con- temporary jazz. In May, the music shifts south to Argen- tina as the Pablo Ziegler Jazz Tango Trio brings its elegant, dramatic fusion of tango and jazz to Faena. Mi- ami favorite Nicole Henry closes the sea- son June 16 with her powerhouse vocals and emotionally rich interpretations. The expanded cal- endar isn’t the only reason Faena is mak- ing noise this fall. On Halloween night, the theater will trade jazz clubs for something considerably more mys- terious with “Memento Mori,” an immersive celebration of theatrical intrigue and dancing. Because at Faena, apparently, even Hallow- een gets a little cabaret. Regular Jazz Series performances begin at 8 p.m., with individual tickets starting at $80. A season package is also available.
