Now, after two years of anticipation surrounding the fu- ture of one of Biscayne Boulevard’s most recog- nizable landmarks, the answer has finally arrived. A popular burger spot has found a new home inside the historic Miami landmark. Burgers & Shakes, the South Florida burger chain from Benoli Hospitality Group, will open its MiMo location within the next few months inside the historic General Tire Building at 5600 Biscayne Blvd. It marks the first new restaurant to occupy the space since Andiamo Brick Oven Pizza closed after a re- markable 23-year run. And for those in the area who can’t wait until then, there’s even better news. Burgers & Shakes opened its highly anticipated North Miami location at 899 NE 125th St. on Tues- day, August 4. The North Miami location is the brand’s fourth location, following Holly- wood, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami Beach. Founded in 2011 in Miami Beach by George Iglesias, Burgers & Shakes has built its reputation on classic diner-style burgers, hand-spun milkshakes, and straightforward comfort food. His intention was to recreate the classic tastes of his youth with the retro atmosphere to match. Because of the quality, affordability, and consistency of the burgers and shakes, the restaurant has been a local fa- vorite that keeps guests coming back. “It’s been an absolute dream to expand Burgers & Shakes throughout South Florida and offer our juicy burgers in multiple loca- tions. We’re excited to add to the North Mi- ami culinary scene,” says Iglesias. “My sister and I grew up loving those classic burger joints in Los Angeles, and we knew we wanted to bring a similar offering to Miami, since there was really nothing like it.” With zero desire to chase the rising smash-burger or secret-sauce trends that many burger joints are after, Burgers & Shakes keeps it about the basics: fresh, top- tier ingredients cooked to order on specialty grills that preserve flavor integrity. Cus- tomer favorites include their signature clas- sic cheeseburger, a whole grilled fish filet sandwich, and a grilled, not breaded, chicken burger. As for the upcoming Burgers & Shakes lo- cation in MiMo, its opening will be significant. Designed in 1954 by renowned Miami ar- chitect Robert Law Weed as a futuristic Stan- dard Oil gas station, the glass-wrapped structure became one of the defining build- ings of the MiMo Historic District. When res- taurateur Mark Soyka transformed it into Andiamo Brick Oven Pizza in 2001, it helped spark the neighborhood’s culinary renais- sance years before Biscayne Boulevard be- came lined with destination restaurants. Andiamo quickly became more than a pizza spot. It was where generations celebrated birthdays, grabbed weeknight dinners, ate with coworkers, and introduced out-of-town friends to one of Miami’s great neighborhood institutions. The restau- rant won New Times’ Best Pizza award twice, first in 2002 and again nearly two decades later in 2020. When the restaurant announced it would not renew its lease, longtime customers reacted with disappointment, mourning the loss of one of Miami’s last true old-school neighborhood restaurants. The final pizza came out of the brick oven on December 31, 2025. Replacing a restaurant as beloved as Andi- amo was never going to be easy. Thankfully, the Benoli Hospitality Group, founded by Iglesias, maintained the building’s celebrated mid-century architecture while re- storing elements of its original signage, ensur- ing that one of Miami’s most recognizable roadside buildings continues to welcome din- ers for years to come. The menu may be changing from brick-oven pies to burgers and milkshakes, but one of Biscayne Boulevard’s most historic restaurant addresses is getting a second act instead of becoming another empty piece of Miami nostalgia.
