Johnson, whose career traced the shifting expectations placed on Black artists in the early 20th century. Led by Smithsonian curator Dr. Dalila Scruggs, this lecture exam- ines Johnson’s evolution from European modernist training to the vivid, flattened fig- ures that defined his later work, and how those stylistic changes were shaped as much by institutional pressure as by personal vi- sion.
