Phillips also noted that Haas gave invited testimony before The 1836 Project Advi- sory Committee as it worked to provide a “whitewashed version” of Texas history, summa- rized in pamphlet form and distributed to folks when they get their driv- er’s license. Many people in power would rather erase the past, casting racism as the moral failings of a few bad apples rather than as a systemic issue, he said. Blaming it on indi- viduals requires no heavy lifting, no broader societal restructuring. Book bans are happening nationwide, and Florida and Texas have emerged as trend leaders, Phillips said. Looking at a map of the ongoing wave of censorship reveals that an “iron curtain of ignorance” is being drawn around the former Confederacy. “You see those same states, over and over again, being at the forefront of issues like teen pregnancy, lack of knowledge about birth control, women’s lack of control over their bodies, income gaps between Black and white people — over and over,” Phillips said. “The ghost of the Confederacy still haunts us,” he continued. “And that iron curtain of ignorance is being drawn over this same region that was enveloped by that curtain in 1861.” ▼ CENSORSHIP YOU’RE BANNED, ELEANOR ROOSEVELT! FRISCO ISD BLOWS AWAY THE COMPETITION FOR MOST BOOKS BANNED IN TEXAS. BY SIMONE CARTER W hen PEN American released its report “Banned in the U.S.A: The Mounting Pressure to Cen- sor” Texas was near the top of the list for the amount of books banned in each state. But one North Texas school district soared beyond the rest when it came to the num- ber of books it restricted in some form or another. Frisco ISD represented more than half of the state’s 625 bans, with oft-banned titles The Handmaid’s Tale being joined by the more head-scratching likes of Eleanor Roos- evelt, Fighter for Justice. A spokesperson for the Frisco ISD told the Observer via email, “Just because a book is listed on the Frisco ISD website as re- viewed does not mean that the book was banned from the district.” That’s why it’s important to note that PEN America’s list defines “banned” as not only the books that have been permanently removed from li- brary shelves and classrooms, but also those titles that have been restricted at least tem- porarily due to some sort of review. Here are the 368 banned books from Frisco ISD (as of June 2023): Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War by Karen Abbott Public Enemies by Ann Aguirre The Beautiful by Renée Ahdieh The Damned by Renée Ahdieh The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie Before We Were Free by Julia Alvarez The Secrets of Peaches by Jodi Lynn Anderson The Haters by Jesse Andrews Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Part 1 - Phantom Blood, Vols. 1-3 by Hirohiko Araki Watcher in the Woods: A Rockton Novel by Kelley Armstrong Damsel by Elana K.
