20 July 4–10, 2024 dallasobserver.com DALLAS OBSERVER Classified | MusiC | dish | Culture | unfair Park | Contents A Day To Remember 6:30 P.M. FRIDAY, JULY 5, THE PAVILION AT TOYOTA MUSIC FACTORY, 300 W. LAS COLINAS BLVD. $41.30+ AT LIVENATION.COM The metalcore genre and all of its uniformity has produced its share of forgettable bands, but what has always made A Day To Remember stand out is what it borrows from the pop-punk sub-genre—namely, its catchy, melodic hooks. That may be why, after over 20 years, the band is still drawing big crowds and headlining big tours. The band’s last album, You’re Welcome, was released in 2021, not long before the group parted ways with their longtime bass player for sexual misconduct and other past offenses. The band has lied pretty low since then, releasing just a handful of singles in anticipation of a new album. A Day to Remember’s The Least Anticipated Album Tour will come to Irving on Friday with The Story So Far, Four Year Strong and Pain Of Truth. DAVID FLETCHER The Queens of R&B 7 P.M. FRIDAY, JULY 5, DOS EQUIS PAVILION, 1818 FIRST AVE. $41.30+ AT LIVENATION.COM If you listened to pop radio in the mid- to late- ’90s, you know that Xscape, SWV, Mya, Total and 702 certainly qualify as contenders as “The Queens of R&B,” and that’s exactly what the tour is named. Sure, the names may sound familiar, and their songs might not immediately come to mind, but if you heard 702’s slow jam “Get it Together,” the bouncing rhythm of Xscape’s “Feels So Good” or the singalong lyrics to SWV’s “You’re the One,” you’d be right back in the passenger’s seat with the radio blasting. Together with Mya, the voice of “Ghetto Superstar,” and Total, who sang the chorus of Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy,” these queens of R&B will be playing these hits and more Friday night in Fair Park. DF Jason Boland & The Stragglers 10 P.M. FRIDAY, JULY 5, BILLY BOB’S TEXAS, 2520 RODEO PLAZA, $18+ AT AXS.COM For 25 years, Jason Boland & The Stragglers have been at the forefront of the red dirt country movement, paving the way for acts like Cross Canadian Ragweed, Stoney LaRue and Turnpike Troubadours. From their humble beginnings in Hurrah, Oklahoma, to their relocation to Austin, Jason Boland & The Stragglers have slowly moved their way up the country charts by keeping their music raw and their lyrics pointed. After the pandemic, Boland returned to the studio to record an EP of covers and set to work on a new Stragglers album produced by longtime collaborator Shooter Jennings. That album, The Light Saw Me, came out in 2021, and tells the story of a Texas cowboy abducted by aliens in the 1890s and returned in the 1990s. Despite its farfetched concept, the album is rich in its philosophical depth. The band comes to Fort Worth this Friday in honor of its 25th Anniversary Tour. DF Powerman 5000 6 P.M. SATURDAY, JULY 6, LAVA CANTINA, 5805 GRANDSCAPE BLVD. $35+ AT EVENTBRITE.COM For all the time that Powerman 5000 has been a band, it will forever be known for its summer of 1999 hit “When Worlds Collide” and its wonderfully late-’90s, cyber industrial nü-metal video. While it’s easy to lose Powerman 5000 in a stew that includes singer Spider One’s brother Rob Zombie, as well as Static-X, Coal Chamber, Mudvayne — and countless others from the era — Powerman 5000 stands apart for its relentless dedication to its particular niche of music. Listening to the band’s May release, Abandon Ship, there really isn’t a whole lot of difference between it and the sound of the band’s 1999 breakthrough, Tonight the Stars Revolt! While other bands have only returned to their nü metal days in recent years to cash in on the current cultural nostalgia of it all, one can credit Powerman 5000 for, if nothing else, its authenticity. Sponge, Tantric and Clozure will also be playing this nostalgic night in The Colony. DF Power Trip 6 P.M. SATURDAY, JULY 6, THE FACTORY IN DEEP ELLUM, 2713 CANTON ST. $36.50+ AT AXS.COM The story of Power Trip began right here in Dallas in 2008. The band rose to the top of the local metal scene with its blistering blend of hardcore punk and thrash metal. The band signed to Southern Lord Records in 2013, releasing its debut album, Manifest Decimation, that same year. But it was the band’s sophomore release, Nightmare Logic, that broke Power Trip internationally, with worldwide critics taking note of singer Riley Gale’s powerful voice and lyrics. On the strength of that album, Power Trip would go on to open for metal royalty Ozzy Osbourne, Anthrax and Danzig. It seemed like the story of Power Trip would come to an end when Gale died in August of 2020 at the age of 34, but late last year, the band played a surprise show in Austin with Fugitive singer Seth Gilmore on vocals. In February, the band announced a series of shows including this Saturday’s hometown show with Ceremony, Frozen Soul, Fleshrot and Tyrant’s Might. DF Elijah Smith Frozen Soul opens for Power Trip on Saturday in Deep Ellum. | LET’S DO THIS | t Music Dream Jobs - Dream Talent Since 1998 THE PLACE TO BE AND BE SEEN Scan Me Baby!
