THURSDAY, MAY 23, SOUTH SIDE BALLROOM, 1135 BOTHAM JEAN BLVD. $35+ AT TICKETMASTER.COM British rock band IDLES certainly made an im- pression on North Texas with its last two stops. Many will remember when IDLES came through Dallas in 2021 just after the COVID lockdowns were lifted. It was an absolutely packed show at the Granada Theater. The next time around, the band booked a venue that could accommodate its massive underground fanbase at The Factory in Deep Ellum in support of its album Crawler. IDLES has always had a penchant for writing deeply introspective lyrics without sacrificing the intensity of the music. Described as post- hardcore, noise, powerviolence or even grind- core, IDLES encompasses and transcends these genre labels. While many bands attempt to glossy-up their words to evade specific interpre- tations, IDLES says it like it is and means it — as heard on this year’s Tangk release. Chicago post-punk Ganser opens. DAVID FLETCHER GUNNA 8 P.M. FRIDAY, MAY 24, THE PAVILION AT TOYOTA MUSIC FACTORY, 300 W. LAS COLINAS BLVD. $46.15+ AT LIVENATION.COM Rapper Gunna grew up in the hip-hop haven of College Park, Georgia, the home of Jermaine Dupri, Kap G, 2 Chainz and many others. The rapper released his first mixtape in 2013 as Young Gunna and was signed to Young Thug’s YSL label in 2016, where he has been ever since. Much of the rapper’s time in 2022 was spent battling a 56-count RICO Act indictment along with Young Thug and 26 others associated with the label. Gunna turned himself in in May 2022 and spent seven months in jail before he struck a deal, pleading guilty to a single charge of rack- eteering. He was sentenced to five years in prison with one year commuted to time served and the rest suspended and subject to proba- tion conditions. Gunna continued to write and record music throughout the process, resulting in A Gift & a Curse, which drew mixed reviews for its handling of the rapper’s real-life issues. This year, Gunna released his melodic One of Wun, which he is supporting on The Bittersweet Tour with Flo Milli. DF Taking Back Sunday 8 P.M. FRIDAY, MAY 24, SOUTH SIDE BALLROOM, 1135 BOTHAM JEAN BLVD. $39.50 AT TICKETMASTER.COM 8 P.M. MONDAY, MAY 27, TANNAHILL’S TAVERN AND MUSIC HALL, 122 E. EXCHANGE AVE. STE. 200. $39.50 AT TICKETMASTER.COM The Long Island emo band Taking Back Sunday was founded around the turn of the century with singer Jesse Lacey, who quit after the release of the band’s first EP in 2000 to start his own band, Brand New. Lacey was replaced by the band’s original bassist Adam Lazzara, who has stayed in that role ever since. Two years after Lacey’s de- parture, guitarist John Nolan and second bassist Shaun Cooper left the band to form Straylight Run. They rejoined in 2010 after the release of the band’s three best-selling records. So, while all of the current members predate the band’s classic era, most of the members who will play its big- gest song, “A Decade Under the Influence,” this week were not in the band when it was recorded. Taking Back Sunday will swing through Dallas’ South Side Ballroom on Friday before heading to Austin and Houston this weekend, and will come back through Fort Worth on Monday. Both shows have opening support from Citizen. DF Melanie Martinez 7 P.M. SATURDAY, MAY 25, AMERICAN AIRLINES CENTER, 2500 VICTORY AVE. $164+ AT TICKETMASTER.COM From Queens, New York, Melanie Martinez first came to the public’s attention during Season 3 of The Voice in which singer Adam Levine of Ma- roon 5 served as her coach. Martinez was elimi- nated in the Top 6 competition, but honestly, she has done just fine for herself without the win. In the years following her time on the show, Martinez independently released her first single, “Dollhouse,” and was subsequently signed to Atlantic Records. Since signing to a major label, Martinez has shown great attention to the aes- thetics of her albums, each one carrying a theme through her music videos and concert performances. On this tour, Martinez is celebrat- ing the trilogy of albums she created during her time with Atlantic. The Trilogy Tour will feature opening support from Canadian indie band Men I Trust and Chicago indie-pop band Beach Bunny. DF Thievery Corporation 7 P.M. WEDNESDAY, MAY 29, HOUSE OF BLUES, 2200 N. LAMAR ST. $59+ AT LIVENATION.COM Washington, D.C., residents Rob Garza and Eric Hilton began making electronic music together under the name Thievery Corporation in 1995. Their sound borrows elements from genres as disparate as Indian classical and acid jazz. After founding the Eighteenth Street Lounge Music record label in 1996, Thievery Corporation re- mained an independent music duo. Though they’ve incorporated music from all over the world, Thievery Corporation has always had a special love for the bossa nova music coming out of Brazil in the ’60s and early ’70s. The mu- sic is downtempo and chill, moving seamlessly between genres with words flowing through several languages. This is certain to be a relaxed show made to soothe restless spirits. Synth-pop DJ Matthew Dear opens the show. DF | LET’S DO THIS | t Music Mike Brooks See British rock band IDLES on Thursday, May 23, at South Side Ballroom. Hottest Latin aduLt CLub in daLLas!
