204 FOOD & DRINK BEST LATE-NIGHT EATS PINKY’S 810 N. SECOND ST. 602-726-1033 PINKYSDOWNTOWN.COM Hangry party people, this newcomer to the Phoenix food scene is for you. In a down- town with scant late-night eats, this Ameri- cana-style joint blossoms as an after-dark oasis, open till midnight Sunday through Thursday, and 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Improbably it also opens every day at 9 a.m., so you could wash down a glizzy with a 99-cent cup of java or a bolder wake-me-up, like the frozen, tequila-based Sonoran Slush. At any time of day, you can grab breakfast burritos, burgers, wings, a sandwich wrapped in churro waffles and even a couple of steak dinner choices. The room is spacious and loaded with pool tables, darts, a jukebox and several TVs tuned to sports. Pinky’s is a party. Saddle up and make some new friends on the cheap. i i i BEST HAPPY HOUR FOOD KING SALMON 2825 N. CENTRAL AVE. 602-698-1055 KINGSALMONSUSHI.COM 4041 E. THOMAS ROAD, #115 602-919-2787 KINGSALMONARCADIA.COM When we first visited King Salmon, we were confused. Did the all-day happy hour mean half off the listed prices? Or were those prices the halved amount? Just in case, we ordered conservatively. When our remark- ably small bill came, we realized the error of our ways and resolved to come back and order more. Then another group of diners sat at the table next to us and turned to their friends, confused. We leaned over to share our newfound knowledge of the outstanding deal. At the central Phoenix and Arcadia sushi restaurant, during happy hour, which seems to be perpetual, sushi rolls are 50% off. The discount means no reduction in size or quality. The Lion King roll overflows with cubes of fresh salmon. The Pacific roll packs hamachi, salmon, tuna and white fish into a roll that’s more fish than filler. And for less than $10, the I Love Crab roll comes topped with an entire tempura-fried soft shell crab. BEST RESTAURANT YOU CAN BRING YOUR DOG TO O.H.S.O. BREWERY + DISTILLERY 10810 N. TATUM BLVD. #126 602-900-9003 335 N. GILBERT ROAD, #102, GILBERT 602-900-9004 AND OTHER VALLEY LOCATIONS OHSOBREWERY.COM Some people swear dogs are the new kids. And you can’t leave your kids at home, right? Slap some dog shoes on your fur baby and take them to one of O.H.S.O.’s Valley locations, where you can commiserate with your fellow fur-parents over one of the 30 local beers on tap. The staff is all-in on canine customers, with expansive (and cooled) outdoor patio seating, leash hooks at tables, free house- made spent grain doggy biscuits and person- alized water bowls for every canis familiaris. Their “bark bites” menu offers such protein selections as chicken breast, burger patty and salmon, plus sweet potato fries. Grab you a bite from the extensive human-food menu as you discuss the rising cost of obedience schools. But be forewarned: The portions are hearty. You may need a doggie bag. i i i BEST WACKY PLACE TO ENTERTAIN KIDS ORGAN STOP PIZZA 1149 E. SOUTHERN AVE., MESA 480-813-5700 ORGANSTOPPIZZA.COM Dancing cat puppets? Check. A huge disco ball? Check. Sparkling lights synced with music, occasional bubbles, show tunes, Christmas music, ice cream and pretty solid pizza? Hell yeah. Organ Stop Pizza has been entertaining Valley customers for over 50 years, and it’s just as fun as day one. At this stupefying Mesa spot, a Mighty Wurlitzer organ rises from the ground every hour, conducted by a music master who plays not just the pipes, but the entire building. A ceiling full of horns and pianos chime along with bells and whistles and even a quacking duck in the corner. Kids and adults alike can submit song requests and get a birthday shout-out while inhaling pizza, soda and ice cream. The whole place is a throwback, including the prices, making this casual, come-as-you-are spot the most fun a family can have for around $30. We’re pretty sure parents will get a kick out of it, too.
